Heather Huseth - Trainer Bio
Up until 2009, I was a wife, a mother of two, a Staff Accountant and a college student. I thought that this was the path that I was supposed to be on. I wasn’t considered unhealthy or overweight but I was not exactly healthy and physically fit either. I know this because I found myself saying things like” I wish I looked the way I used to” and “why do I always feel tired”? Additionally, I realized that I did not have anything that I enjoyed doing for myself. I began to realize that I had entered that same “rut” as everyone else. This is when I had my “Ah ha” moment and knew that I needed to do something. Out of the blue, I decided to sign up for Grandma’s Half-Marathon. I went out and bought a treadmill. I was determined to do something. Two days after registration, I got an email stating that I was not accepted into the lottery. I remember feeling heartbroken. I was not about to take “no” for an answer, so I did the next best thing…I signed up for the full marathon. I printed out the novice training guide from Grandmas website and quickly learned that running one mile was difficult. I remember thinking “I am going to run 26.2 miles and I cannot even run 1 mile!”
I took each day at a time. I needed to get past that first mile before I could follow any training guide. With determination and motivation I went from not being able to run 1 mile to running 3 miles, then 6 miles a day, and 10 miles on the weekend. Before I knew it, it was race day. I ran my very first marathon in 5 hours and 25 min in 90 degree weather! I was so proud of myself. I finally did something for me! I signed up for Grandma’s again in 2010 because I knew that I could beat this time. However, this time I quickly learned that I needed to do more than just run to improve my time. I joined a cycle class and began strength training. Adding cross training to my running completely improved my speed. I ran my second marathon in 3 hours 49 min (9 min from qualifying for Boston Marathon)!!!! Being this close to qualifying for Boston, I yet signed up for another marathon in 2010. I ran Mankato Marathon in 3 hours and 30 min! I beat the qualifying time by 10 min!!!!! In addition to running marathons, I raced in two sprint triathlons, in which I won first place for my age group on my second triathlon. I am racing in my first Half-Iron in 2011 and will be running Boston Marathon in 2012!
All of my accomplishments were the end result of making that change and sticking to it. I am not saying that this is as easy as it sounds because it was not, at least not at first. It takes time, patience, determination, and motivation. Setting small achievable goals opens the doors to more goals and dreams. Because of all of this, I changed careers from wanting to be an Accountant to becoming a personal trainer. I feel that if I was able to make all of my dreams and goals come true, I could help others succeed in theirs one step at a time.
